1. Application of color matching in guest rooms
The visual appeal of a guest room is crucial, forming the first impression guests have. Therefore, the color scheme of a guest room should achieve a harmonious, unified, or romantic effect. To achieve this, it is necessary to carefully analyze the attributes of colors and apply them correctly in the guest room design.
Color has three attributes: hue, value (or brightness), and chroma (or purity). These three attributes can be displayed simultaneously on any object, and are therefore considered the three major elements of color. Hue refers to the appearance and characteristics of a color. For example, the seven hues of a rainbow-red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and violet-reflect the different qualities of each color. Value (or brightness) refers to the lightness or darkness of a color. White, black, and different shades of gray all exhibit varying degrees of lightness and darkness. In the color spectrum, yellow has the strongest value, while violet has the lowest, with value gradually decreasing towards both ends. To ensure a good visual effect, in interior color schemes for guest rooms, the ceiling should generally have the highest value, followed by the walls, and the floor should have the lowest value. Chroma (or purity) is the saturation of a color, also known as chroma. Chroma is often described by its level; higher chroma means a purer and more vibrant color, while lower chroma means a duller and more muted color.
Combinations of colors with different hues, brightness, and saturation evoke different psychological feelings. For example, red, yellow, and orange provide strong visual stimulation, reminding people of the warm sun and firelight, thus creating a feeling of warmth; hence, they are called warm colors. Cyan and blue evoke images of the sky, rivers, and overcast days, creating a feeling of coldness; hence, they are called cool colors. Warm and cool color schemes should not be used interchangeably, otherwise, it will create a complex and visually confusing illusion. Therefore, in guest room decoration, warm-colored wallpaper and curtains are often paired with warm-colored furniture, sofas, and beds; similarly, cool-colored decorations should also be coordinated and consistent.
High-brightness, high-saturation colors, especially those leaning towards warm shades like red and orange, evoke excitement and create a sense of expansion within a given area. Conversely, low-brightness, low-saturation colors, leaning towards cool shades like blue and cyan, create a sense of calm and a sense of contraction within a given area. Clearly, different color combinations produce different visual effects. In the color scheme of guest room interior decoration, the general principle is "large harmony, small contrast." "Large" refers to the walls and ceiling, where "large harmony" means using a large area of quiet, low-saturation color to achieve overall color harmony. "Small" refers to decorative items (such as ornaments and cushions), where "small contrast" means using bold, high-saturation colors in small areas, which can have a finishing touch effect.
Furthermore, the color scheme for guest rooms should be determined based on the theme. Since most guests rest at night and may go out during the day, the color scheme should consider the visual effects of different times of day. It's also important to be mindful of regional and cultural differences, including color preferences and taboos. For example, people in the Jiangnan region prefer light colors, while those in the north prefer bolder colors. These factors must be considered in guest room color schemes; the goal is to find variation within unity, and harmony within variation, to create a comfortable visual experience.
2. Application of lighting in guest rooms
The decoration and layout of guest rooms should make full use of natural light and indoor lighting, with indoor lighting being an important aspect of guest room decoration and layout.
(1) The main function of indoor lighting in guest rooms
① Providing illumination to create atmosphere. Providing illumination is the most important function of lighting; the color and brightness of light are the main factors determining the atmosphere of a room. The stimulation of light can affect people's emotions. Generally speaking, a bright room is more stimulating than a dark room, but this stimulation must be appropriate to the atmosphere the space should have. Excessive light, like noise, is detrimental to the environment. Because colors vary with the light source, many hues appear dazzling under sunlight during the day, but may become dim and lifeless after sunset without proper lighting. Therefore, rather than relying on color to create atmosphere, using different levels of lighting will yield a more ideal effect.
② Improve the sense of space and three-dimensionality. The openness of an interior space is directly proportional to the brightness of the lighting; a brighter room feels larger, while a darker room feels smaller. Diffuse light filling the room makes the space feel longer, while direct light can enhance the shadows of objects in the room. The contrast between light and shadow enhances the three-dimensionality of the room space.
(2) Factors to consider in guest room interior lighting design
Guest room decorative lighting is a comprehensive professional skill, and the following factors need to be fully considered in the design.
① Energy efficiency: Natural lighting and top and side lighting should be reasonably combined, and energy-efficient lighting fixtures and materials should be selected to achieve a better design effect.
② Harmony: Different brightness levels are designed according to the function of the lighting to ensure that the lighting design is in harmony with the decoration design and better meets the needs of the hotel.
③ Purposefulness: In accordance with the interior design, special interior decorations such as murals, artworks, green plants, and water features will be given focused lighting.
④ Technical Aspects: New lighting technologies should be adopted in the design of guest room decorative lighting, adhering to relevant national technical standards and specifications to meet the requirements of various hotel service functions. Guest room lighting design should fully utilize all the characteristics of light, combining the various functions and design concepts of the guest room to create an ideal world of light, an artistic world, achieving a unified design effect that integrates comfort, artistry, and safety.
(3) Requirements for guest room interior lighting design
Hotel rooms should feel like home, with tranquility, comfort, and a welcoming atmosphere as their typical characteristics.
① Illumination requirements: The general indoor illumination of guest rooms is 50~100 lux to reflect the characteristics of quietness, softness and comfort; however, local lighting, such as the lighting in front of the dressing mirror and the bedside reading lighting, should provide sufficient illumination, and the illumination of these areas should be 300 lux.
② Color temperature requirements: Use light sources below 3500 Kelvin in bedrooms and above 3500 Kelvin in bathrooms. Bathrooms require a higher color temperature to create a clean and refreshing atmosphere.
③ Color rendering requirement: Good color rendering can increase guests' confidence and make them feel comfortable and good.
(4) Commonly used lighting fixtures in guest rooms
① Chandeliers. These are light fixtures that are generally suspended from the ceiling. They are the most commonly used type of lighting fixture and come in various types, including direct, indirect, downward projection, and diffused light. The size of the chandelier and the number of light bulbs are related to the size of the room. Chandeliers are generally 500-1000 mm above the ceiling, and the center of the light source should ideally be 750 mm from the ceiling panel. These can be adjusted according to specific needs.
② Ceiling lights. These are lights that are directly installed on the ceiling. They include downlights, diffused lights, and general lighting, with light sources including incandescent and fluorescent. Their advantage is that they can make the ceiling brighter, creating a bright feeling throughout the room; however, they are prone to glare. The shape, layout, structure, and materials used in ceiling lights should be considered based on usage and aesthetic requirements. The size of the light fixture should be appropriate for the interior space, and the structure should be safe and reliable.
③ Recessed lights. These are concealed light fixtures installed inside the ceiling, with the light socket seamlessly integrated into the ceiling. They are typically downward-projecting direct light sources. Due to their ability to create a dim or shadowy effect, recessed lights are often used in conjunction with other light fixtures.
④ Wall lamps. Wall lamps are light fixtures installed on walls, typically used to enhance interior decoration and supplement lighting. Because they are not high off the ground, they generally use low-wattage bulbs. The height of the fixture is determined by its shape; large ones are 450-800 mm, and small ones are 275-450 mm. Large wall lamps usually use 100-watt or 150-watt incandescent bulbs, while small wall lamps use 40-watt or 60-watt incandescent bulbs.
⑤ Portable Lighting Fixtures. These are lighting fixtures that can be placed freely as needed. Table lamps and floor lamps generally fall into this category. Table lamps, also called desk lamps, are often referred to as the "light cavalry" of lighting due to their flexibility and ease of movement. Table lamps typically use metal, ceramic, or plastic for the base and silk, gauze, paper, or glass for the lampshade. They can use fluorescent or incandescent bulbs. They are characterized by their compact size, convenient switching, free movement, adjustable dimming, and aesthetically pleasing design. Floor lamps generally have a retractable height-adjustable rod, and other components are similar to table lamps. They feature flexible beam angles, no glare, and a beautiful and elegant design.
